Directed by Jean Deaux, “Escape” attends to the concept of the underground economy while positioning drugs and addiction as an escape from working class issues. The working-class aesthetic is illustrated through the images of the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom showing urban life is characterized by poverty. Escape captures the struggles of addiction within love, and drugs for black working class black Chicagoans.
