Kehlani - Can I (Quarantine Style) [Official Music Video]

Kehlani’s 2020 video for “Can I” centers pleasure, sex-work, and the erotic as she highlights the bodies of several women of color. Kehlani is attempting to de-stigmatize sex work and shows that modern sex work looks like chat-rooms and private video sessions. The video challenges dominant narratives that situate the women’s body, sex, and intimacy as reserved for behind closed doors. As the participant on the video screen, Kehlani shows that there is a lot of pleasure found within sex work for both the entertainer and the viewer. This embodies a black queer politics similar to Audre Lorde, a politics that embraces the desires and needs of the body. The final shot gives a definition of sex work that brings light to the criminalization, stigmatization, and oppression that comes with street work.
