Syd - Fast Car (Official Video)
Syd’s Fast Car vide showcases back lesbian love and communicates a politics of refusal, a refusal that cries for visibility. The warm color, antique bronco, and overall aesthetics of the video all queer time and when paired with the audio makes it seem like the video is an 80s scene. The video centers the enjoyment of two black women enjoying their time together. This music video uses elements of love, and intimacy, and desire to showcase the joy within black queer love. Through the close-ups of both women we are able to feel their connection and also the awkwardness when their moment of intimacy is interrupted by a friend. As Syd and Simone get physical towards the end we see that they are only allowed privacy within the skies. This video communicates a queer politics because of its candid display of love, and the way that it illustrates that queer love is fluid and in motion, fugitive almost. The blast of color and blur at the end are also reflective of the vibrancy and motion that comes with being queer in a world marked by penetrative heteronrmative patriarchy.
